There are certain moments in Detroit sports history that become forever etched in the memories of every fan who witnessed them. One such moment came on a chilly October evening in 2006, when Magglio Ordóñez launched a dramatic, ninth-inning home run that not only secured a playoff victory but also sent the Detroit Tigers to the World Series. To be in Comerica Park that night—with my wife Sue and our sons Zac and Corey—was one of the greatest shared family experiences of my life.
The Stage Is Set
On October 14, 2006, the Tigers faced the Oakland Athletics in Game 4 of the American League Championship Series. The Tigers were already ahead three games to none, but this game was fiercely contested. By the bottom of the ninth, the score was tied 3–3, and the crowd was tense with anticipation. Every fan in Comerica Park seemed to sense that history was about to be made.
Magglio’s Heroics
With two men on base, Magglio Ordóñez stepped to the plate. The cold air carried a hush across the ballpark, quickly followed by the thunderous crack of the bat. His towering three-run shot soared into the night, landing deep in the stands. Pandemonium erupted as fans leapt from their seats, hugging strangers and screaming in joy. Final score: Tigers 6, A’s 3. The sweep was complete, and the Tigers were bound for the World Series.
Family in the Moment
For Sue, Zac, Corey, and me, it was more than a baseball game—it was a family memory of pure exhilaration. We had bundled up to face the crisp October chill (it was 42 degrees at game time), but in that instant, the cold vanished. The warmth of sharing such a historic moment together is something I will never forget.
A Hidden Treasure
Years later, this memory resurfaced in the most unexpected way. My daughter Heidi had gifted me a framed set of three panoramic photographs capturing iconic moments in Tigers history: the final pitch at Tiger Stadium, the first pitch at Comerica Park, and a third image I hadn’t initially recognized. I stored the frame away, and only when Sue and I moved to New Hampshire did I rediscover it while preparing to decorate our sports-themed TV room.
As I hung the photos, I looked closely at the third image—and suddenly realized it was from that very moment of Magglio’s historic swing. Even more astonishing, the panoramic shot, taken from far behind our section, captured my own face. At the precise instant the shutter clicked, I happened to be glancing toward the left-field scoreboard. Among 42,967 fans in attendance, there I was, immortalized in a photograph of one of the Tigers’ greatest moments.
A Story Still Told
That framed set of three images now hangs proudly on the wall of our TV room, sparking conversations with every visitor. The fact that my family was there, that I witnessed Magglio’s walk-off in person, and that by pure chance I ended up in the photo—it all makes this memory even more special. It is a story I will never tire of telling, a reminder of how sports can unite families and leave us with timeless treasures.
Looking Ahead
As unforgettable as Magglio’s home run was, it was far from the last great sports memory I would share with my children. In the years that followed, Zac, Corey, and I continued to experience Detroit’s highs and lows together, from regular season battles to playoff runs. In the next episode, I’ll recount another remarkable moment that deepened our family’s bond through the shared passion of sports.
